Power trips can be difficult.

Especially when they come from people who have authority in your life.

More when it's YOU!

Yeah I said it!

Mr. Perfect.

Good news though.

They can be treated simply by understanding:

Power trips come from a misunderstanding between CONTROL and RESPONSIBILITY ... with a lack of TRUST in there for good measure.

This switch causes a person to micro-manage or be overly agressive with others.

The pursuit of goals leads to task-orientation that is so narrowly focused the person typically isn't aware of (or doesn't care about) those they hurt around them.

This happened in the military ALL THE TIME when I was serving.

It was a systemic issue that arose with top-down leadership.

Why?

Because Non-Commissioned Officers had FREE REIGN to:

give orders

yell at

and belittle lower enlisted with no consequence

... for the most part.

Heck, I did it as soon as I made my stripes.

Until I was taught a better way.

To be tenacious and obsessive may be a great characteristic at times.

But not to be invasive, obnoxious, perfectionistic, rigid, close-minded, irritable or critical.

Any of these sound familiar?

Other contributing factors to Power trips include:

  • Power has overridden a sense of humanity or established values.

  • It's a self- protection mechanism where control equates to safety in a chaotic environment.

  • It's allowed with a certain "stature"

… and a host of other offenders.

The good news is that Power trips are not “hard” character traits that are very difficult to change. They are just learned behavior that is “easy” to unlearn with a little self-discipline, vulnerability, and time.

Here's the key:

You need to realize that control is an illusion. You have none.

You could literally have a brain aneurism right now. Or go into cardiac arrest.

So chill out about micro-managing everything.

Instead:

  • Slow down
  • Take Responsibility, not Control
  • Decide on top level priorities
  • Delegate medium level priorities
  • Defer low level priorities
  • Find where people can be most helpful
  • Influence what you can
  • Re-Focus & Repeat
